Each year, hundreds of books are banned or challenged in schools and libraries by people who feel the books and/or information should be removed and no longer available to anyone. Teen Advisory Group

TAG is your voice in your library community!

Calling all teens, 7th Grade & Up! This leadership role offers community service hours where teens have a chance to have a voice in the library. At TAG we will work together on ways to improve the library for teens with programming ideas, community service opportunities, and much more.

The first meeting is Monday, September 19th at 6pm.

Did you know OBPL has magazines for children and teens?

Children's magazines are located behind the Youth Services desk by the J DVDs. They include American Girl, Cricket, Click, Spider, Faces, Muse, Cobblestone, Ask, Muse, and Dig. 

Teen magazines are located in the YA area near the New YA books. They include Seventeen, MAD, TeenVogue, and People StyleWatch.

All magazines are available for check out except the most current issue. 

Fall Programs!

September & October Programs are open for Registration! The brochure available on the library website or in the Program Brochures tab, under Fall 2016. 

Fall Book Discussions include 2017 Bluestem: Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit on September 29th and A Curious Tale of the In-Between by Lauren DeStefano on October 27th.

 

Recommended for Grades 4-6

YA Book Discussions include Printz winner Looking for Alaska by John Green on September 15th and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness on October 13th (the movie is released on October 14th!).

 

Recommended for Grades 8 & Up

All discussions start at 4:30pm and will include snacks! Books are available ahead of time at Circulation. No registration necessary.

Don't forget to sign up for Lego League!! Lego League is on Thursdays at 6-7pm on September 15th & October 13th. We hope to see you there!

A Summer to Remember

Read for the Win

Summer Readers set new records this year with a 26% increase in participation! Readers filled in our Olympic Rings to kick of the 2016 Olympics and earned prizes along the way.

A huge thank you to all summer readers!

We set records for programs this summer as well! Some of our top programs this summer included Life Size Candy Land, Lego League Jr., Maker Madness, and Let The Games Begin!

Additionally, we had a group of amazing volunteers this summer who put in many hours helping with programs! They had a positive impact on our programs! A huge thank you to Savita, Kayode, Janie, Zina, Chris, Maggie, Rithik, Ashna, and Sophia from the Youth Services Staff!

True Balance Karate Class

Last week we hosted True Balance Karate for a karate class. 
Paul Helsdon, the Chief Instructor from True Balance Karate taught a variety of age groups some of the basics in karate. By the end of the class, everyone was able to break through a board!! 

Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun and able to take away something new from course. True Balance Karate has also donated one of our coupons for Summer Reading prizes. Readers have the chance to earn a coupon for a FREE month of karate lessons, a free private introductory lesson, and a free karate uniform. There is still plenty of time to sign up and participate in Summer Reading!

The Youth Services Staff has been busy these past few weeks with Summer Reading and summer programs! It's not too late to sign up for Summer Reading! Stop by the desk to sign up and pick up a log; you will earn prizes along the way!

Life Size Candy Land 

Life Size Candy Land was a huge success last week! Participants were able to make their way around the Candy Land board multiple times, getting candy along the way.

A huge thank you to our volunteers for helping out! They were able to take smaller groups around the game board to avoid long waits during game play! 

No worries! If you were stuck on the wait list or didn't get a chance to sign up, we plan on bringing the program back in the future! 

A Fresh Look in time for Summer Reading!

As you walk in to the Youth Services area, one of the first things you will notice is how quickly the Read for the Win Olympic Rings are filling in!

Summer Reading, Read for the Win kicked off June 1st! Readers have been running in to sign up and receive their prizes! There is still plenty of time to sign up if you haven't already!!

Just before the kick off of Summer Reading, Read for the Win, we made a few changes around Youth Services. We were able to change some of the shelving behind the Youth desk to utilize the space better, which opened up a few more ideas. 

The first step was moving DVD's! They are now right outside the Program Room, behind the Youth desk. Right along with the Youth DVD's are the Youth Magazines! Be sure to check out the latest from American Girl, Cricket, Dig, Faces, and more!

 

Next, we switched out our New Book shelving, including New Nonfiction and New Fiction.

On the back side of the New Books, you will find the J Graphic Novels.

With a few shelves opened up, we moved the American Girl books, and the Caudill Awards and Bluestem Awards between the Youth Services desk and the start of the J Fiction.
