Everyone is enjoying our new fish tank!
What’s in it? Redear Sunfish!
We are taking part in the DuPage Forest Preserve District’s
“Bass in the Class” program. We picked up 14 baby fish from the Fullersberg
Nature Center back on October 8. Our mission is to help raise them until their
release in the spring. This wonderful program is meant to provide first-hand
experiences with life cycles, food chains, ecosystems and animal behavior.
Another purpose of raising this species is to help control invasive species.
Redear Sunfish
have been used as a control mechanism for invasive zebra and quagga mussels.
Research has shown that stocking high densities of redear sunfish can help
control populations of these invasive mussels. They will never eradicate the
populations, but they help to control them by eating adult mussels. FPDDC has
begun trying to stock Redear to control zebra mussel populations.
